We answered: What's a Good Gumball Picker Upper or How to Pick up Sweet Gum Balls?

Many people are looking for a simple solution for picking up the sweetgum balls that fall from their sweet gum trees. These little balls can be a big nuisance when you have to spend hours raking them up by hand; however, there are other alternatives. In fact, one of the most frequent questions we get is will a lawn sweeper pick up sweet gumballs?

UPDATE  Spring 2017: Before we get to the ability of Lawn Sweepers on picking up gum balls, we recently we had a visitor write in and suggest a (quite obvious actually) way that we hadn't thought of, a Wet Dry Vac. We thought that was a great idea, as long as you don't mind the cord. Before we get to

While note the perfect solution, there are some sweepers that can do a fairly good job picking up gumballs. But none are particularly better than the others. The secret is in properly adjusting the height of your lawn sweeper.

You want to be sure that you have your sweeper set high enough that it will be able to pass over the sweet gumballs, but low enough that it can actually pick them up. Additionally, if you leave the sweet gum balls in your yard and allow them to embed into the ground, they can be extremely difficult for any type of lawn sweeper to pick up. The solution is to be diligent about keeping them picked up from your yard so that you do not end up with an abundance of them in your grass and landscaping.

Believe it or not, there is actually a specific product that is made just for this purpose. It’s the Bag-A-Nut Harvester. It’s a product that’s made to pick up all sorts of nuts but they have several models that are made specifically for picking up sweet gum balls. Mind you, they’re fairly expensive, ranging from $375 - $675. But if you’re serious about picking these things up, you might consider it. Although it may be preferable to try a less expensive option first that serves multiple purposes. However, if you're seriously tired of these pesty balls and want a sure fire solution, the Bag-A-Nut may be your best option.

Here’s a cool product video showing how Bag-A-Nut works:

Many homeowners get extremely frustrated when they have to deal with these sticky balls; however, with the right equipment and a little experimentation on the proper height setting of your lawn sweeper, you can get your lawn looking great with very little effort. Forget about trying to rake the sweet gumballs out of your yard, unless of course, you have left them for several seasons and they have embedded themselves into the top layer of soil. If this is the case, you will likely have to take a more manually intensive approach and try to rake them up before you can begin using your lawn sweeper.
